A POSITIVE STORY FROM RESIDENCY!!!

A Positive Story from Residency!!!!

‘’A month ago, a 20 years old female patient was admitted in Department of Surgery as case of “Lower uterine caesarian section (operation to deliver baby) and right hemi-colectomy (operation of intestine for carcinoma colon). Unfortunately she developed convulsion on 2nd post operative day. I was night duty doctor in charge. I managed the complication with very limited resources at night time. I was there stand by with the patient whole night. She would have died if she had not received emergency management but she was saved with the collective effort from all staff of the hospital.

There was no space and resources to provide privacy to patient. All other patients were also watching our activities. In the morning when I transferred the patient to ICU for further treatment, another patient who was next to the patient we managed at night called me and you know what she said???

She blessed me and said “Doctor you are going to be very good doctor” But at the same time she said “I shall not suggest my children to become doctor unless they really wish to be”. Haha… I did not say anything but I smiled. I forgot all tiredness of night duty by receiving such inspiring response from another patient.

Later I was given responsibility of the first patient in the ICU. She developed wound infection too. So I did daily dressing and wound care. I took her to all consultation. She was unconscious. All her family members were worried. I was doing my best to cure the patient and at the same time counseling the family to keep HOPE.

Few times I got scolded by my professor for my mistakes & deteriorating condition of the patient and taught me proper ways. But I understood it was for my improvement and proper management of patient. I was learning new things day by day. There was another resident doctor who was working with me but when the professor asked her about the patient, she said like she is not looking after her. So, all the responsibilities came up on me.

Day by day she started to improve. She became conscious. I praised all the staffs including nurses of ICU for their awesome management of the patient because I knew I could not have treated her well without their support.

After staying in ICU for a month, she is then transferred to general ward again. While in round, the professor also praised all for bringing LIFE from DEATH. At that moment, my partner resident doctor was saying like “Yes sir! she is our patient and we treat her together”. I was just smiling and said “Thank you” to my professor.

Then we did secondary closure of the wound. After staying in the hospital for about 40 days, she is ready to go home. The patient and her family thanked me and invited me to visit their home for a lunch.  I knew what I did was my job. So I just said “Thank you!”

It is not possible to express the situation when we, as a doctor, see our patient getting discharge with smile in the face.”
